An edgy and elegant luxury fine-art jewellery brand, Emer Roberts Design’s aesthetic has evolved with Emer’s exploration of our fellow mammal—the rat. Her unusual, multi-award winning Wearable Biology fine-art jewellery designs are the culmination of the artist’s exploration of this mammal species through various sculptural and mould-making processes over the last twelve years. An NCAD MFA in Fine Art Sculpture graduate, Emer has gradually transitioned from a large scale sculptural process to a luxury fine-art jewellery brand.
Spanning twelve years of research into this mammal species, Emer’s work has mapped a synchronistic journey which began in the Year of the Rat 2008 onto the present pandemic and the unfolding of a “Disunited States” through the evocation of a medieval plague doctor mask that is visually synonymous with the conical shaped hat of the KKK. Moving from chainmail to a conceptual focus upon chain solely, her most recent work, showcased at Paris Fashion Week, is a 2020 pest-inflected critique of the medieval Scold’s Bridle, which colonially morphed into the Iron Bit or Gag: a barbaric slavery mask.
In 2019, Emer was awarded the prestigious Accessories Designer of the Year in the Fashion and Textiles category at the annual Institute of Designers in Ireland (IDI) awards for her Wearable Biology — Tail Collection. In the same week, the Dublin-based designer was also presented with the Best Product award in the Jewellery category at Showcase 2019 for her Zipper Link Ring - inspired by her passion for architecture and love of Art Deco design. She followed on to win Jewellery Designer of the Year with the Irish Fashion Innovation Awards.
The jewellery brand launched in 2017 at Showcase Ireland where Emer won Best Product Award with her architectural and art deco inspired fine jewellery. Invited that same year to exhibit at International Jewellery London, one of Emer’s wearable art designs was shortlisted for the Editors Choice Award.
Emer showcased her architectural designs in 2018 and launched her Wearable Biology — Jaw Collection in 2019, both with CREATE of Brown Thomas, Dublin, the luxury retail store of the Selfridges Group.
